I made the viral Rice Krispie black sesame bars, by Eric Kim from about 2 months ago and it was worth the delay.
Since every action has an equal and opposite reaction, to balance the universe back out, I developed my own recipe (winged it) and made something I’m calling a Crumpcake. If you have a suggestion of something better to call it, do get in touch! Either way, it’s a gluten free crumpet thing, cooked like a thick juicy pancake. I’ll pop the recipe at the bottom of this week’s newsletter, like I’m Alison Roman.
And now for some things I’ve been thinking about this week – Pages read equals money to spend, Best alternative to… and Gloop Potion
PAGES read equals money to spend could change the book buying to book reading ratio. I can’t claim this idea as my own, but a TikTok lodged itself indelibly in my hippocampus and burrowed in there, so I thought I’d share it. Every page read is a penny to spend. Let’s assume most books are about 300 pages, or £3.00. If a book costs £8.99 at retail price you’re gonna have to go ahead and be reading the best part of 3 books before you can afford to buy another book. If I think of pages unread as deficit, I must be in millions of pounds of page debt… Best to start on a fresh slate.
BEST alternative to… It is a common article starter, that crops up when trying to compare things you’re interested in buying, but sometimes I wish they’d just do a bit more of a real deep dive, more in the realm of “Okay alternatives to…” - I’m not a pro, I’m an everyman! It would be so fine, and useful even, to know an okay alternative.
Eczema! You know it, you love it. It’s your oldest friend, and has been with you since, well, birth, apparently. Over the years I’ve hoarded all manner of creams, lotions, emollients, oils, serums, essences, and unguents. I’m on a mission to use up all the old products, to live a simpler life of Vaseline. The ladies of Poog would only deem some of these long-since-opened products as worthy of putting on their feet, however, under no guidance but my own I’ve started mixing the remains of a bunch of leftover products together to see what happens, and one combo is actually doing amazing things for me and my community. For this week’s experiment I’ve combined the ancient remains of some Egyptian Magic and mixed it with a propolis gel intended for the wounds of farmyard animals. It's stinky, it’s greasy and it’s truly kind of magic. I don’t know the ratios, I don’t know what’s happening, but my hands are Benjamin buttoning. I’m calling it Gloop potion!
🧑🍳CRUMPCAKE RECIPE 🥞
2 heaping tablespoons GF flour
2 teaspoons fast action yeast
1 teaspoon demerara sugar
2 tablespoons yoghurt
Knob of butter
Splash of water/milk/liquid if needed
🥣Mix dry ingredients in a bowl.
🍵Slightly warm up the yoghurt and butter - I put them in the microwave for 30 seconds, then combine warmed yoghurt and butter with the dry ingredients.
🥢Mix together with a whisk, spoon, chopstick, or hand. I don’t think it matters
ultimately.
🎈Leave to prove. Maybe about an hour, or 45 mins if you’re impatient. It will balloon like Violet Beauregard. Stir it up again to pop most of the bubbles.
🍳 Heat up a frying pan and add some olive oil and butter. Then dollop the batter in and fry on a medium-high heat. I like a crispy bottom. Flip it and cook for a minute or 2 more.
I served mine with fried mushrooms, parsley and bit of cheese!
YOM.
P.S. Did you like how I put the recipe first - Are you listening food bloggers? That’s how you do it.

If you think someone would enjoy this little slice of life, send it on! I simply can’t fathom why you wouldn’t…
